Local Call
(France, 2004, 100 min., French with subtitles)
Directed by Arthur Joffé

Forty-year-old astronomy professor Felix Mandel has had his head in the clouds since his father's death. To appease his wife, he agrees to clean out his office and part with his father's cashmere overcoat. No sooner has Felix given the coat away than he receives a collect call from the Great Beyond - his father's outraged voice commands him to retrieve it at once. Arthur Joffé's supernatural comedy takes us on a fantastical journey through Paris as Felix searches for the coat and ultimately discovers its powerful mystery. Inventive and amusing, Local Call touches on family relationships, secular Jewish life, and our connection to the past.
